Types of Dental Implants
Have you ever known someone who never seems to get cavities, even though they eat an insane amount of sugar and rarely see the dentist? While this type of person is certainly rare, it shows the idea that our mouths and bodies are all very different and need to be cared for in different ways. In that vein, several different dental implants can be used to treat patients with missing, chipped, or diseased teeth. The type dentists use based on a thorough examination of your mouth and your oral and general health history. Here are the four main types of dental implants that dentists choose to offer patients:
Subperiosteal Dental Implants:
Subperiosteal dental implants are placed in the jawbone, and the metal post is exposed to hold the restoration. These types of dental implants are most often used in single-stage treatment.
Single-Stage Dental Implants:
A longer implant is placed in the jaw and gums to make the implant's top visible with this type of dental implant. After several months of healing, this allows to go into the mouth and place the abutment and restoration directly on the implant without surgically exposing the implant again.
Two-Stage Dental Implants:
This implant requires surgery to place the dental implant in the jawbone. After letting the mouth heal for a few months, we go back for another minor surgery, expose the implant, attach the dental implant abutment, and temporary crown or restoration.
Endosteal/Endosseous Dental Implants:
Endosteal implants are placed in the jawbone and are usually placed in the above two-stage treatment. These dental implants are often used in place of bridges or dentures.
Again, it is very important to come by for an appointment with your dentists so that they can thoroughly examine your mouth and determine the right treatment plan for your circumstances.
